Dryer vent fires are one of the most preventable — and most overlooked — fire risks in California homes. The U.S. Fire Administration estimates roughly 15,000 dryer-related fires per year, with the vast majority caused by lint buildup in the vent line.

California's dry climate, combined with the prevalence of long vent runs in modern homes (from second-floor laundry rooms to exterior walls), creates ideal conditions for these fires. The good news: every warning sign below is your dryer telling you to schedule professional cleaning — before it becomes a fire.

The 10 warning signs (in order of severity)

1. Clothes take more than one cycle to dry

This is the #1 warning sign. A properly venting dryer should fully dry a normal load in 30-45 minutes. If it takes 60+ minutes, or you're running 2 cycles to get clothes dry — the vent is clogged.

2. The outside of the dryer is hot to the touch

When the vent is blocked, hot moist air has nowhere to escape, so it builds up inside the dryer cabinet. If the top, sides, or back of the dryer is too hot to touch comfortably, the vent is restricted.

3. Burning smell during operation

This is a stop-immediately warning. Lint can ignite at relatively low temperatures (180-200°F). If you smell burning, turn off the dryer, unplug it, and don't use it again until the vent is professionally cleaned.

4. Excessive lint around the dryer or vent opening

Some lint near the lint trap is normal. But if you see lint around the lint trap door, on top of the dryer, or — especially — outside near the exterior vent opening, the vent is overflowing.

5. The exterior vent flap doesn't open properly

Go outside and look at your dryer's exterior vent (usually on a side wall). When the dryer runs, the flap should swing open easily and clear air should come out. If it's stuck, partially blocked, or you don't see much airflow — the vent line is restricted.

6. Humid feel in the laundry room during drying

Air that should be escaping through the vent is leaking back into the laundry room. This adds moisture to the room (which can cause mold) and means your dryer is working much harder than it should.

7. Dryer shuts off mid-cycle

Modern dryers have thermal cutoff fuses that trigger when the internal temperature exceeds safe limits. If your dryer keeps shutting off during a cycle, the vent restriction is causing it to overheat. The thermal fuse is doing its job — but it's a warning that the actual fire is closer than you think.

8. The exterior vent is silent

You should be able to hear the dryer's air rushing out of the exterior vent when it's running. If you stand outside and can't hear or feel air movement — the vent is severely blocked.

9. Visible birds, nests, or critters near the exterior vent

In California, especially in spring, birds nest in exterior dryer vents. A nested vent is a fully-blocked vent + dry organic material — the highest fire risk possible.

10. It's been more than 12 months since the last cleaning

Even with no other warning signs, dryer vents should be professionally cleaned annually for most California homes. The combination of California's dry climate, year-round use, and longer modern vent runs means waiting longer dramatically increases fire risk.

What happens during professional dryer vent cleaning

experienced technicians follow a specific process:

  1. Camera inspection from both the dryer end and the exterior termination
  2. Disconnect the dryer from the vent line
  3. Rotary brush + air whip through the entire vent length
  4. HEPA negative-air vacuum captures all dislodged lint
  5. Clean the exterior vent cap and replace the cap if damaged
  6. Reconnect and test — run the dryer briefly to confirm full airflow
  7. Lint volume report — they'll show you exactly how much lint came out

Total time: 60-90 minutes for most California homes.

The cost vs. risk math

California Airduct Pros doesn't quote dryer vent prices over the phone — every home's vent run, age, and condition is different, and an honest price requires inspection. We start with a free in-home assessment and provide a written quote on the spot.

What we can tell you: the average dryer-related fire causes tens of thousands of dollars in property damage, plus the risk to life and family. Legitimate dryer vent cleaning is a fraction of that cost. The math isn't subtle.
